A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
