England along with Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing echoes their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
